The Jimenez Family

****SPOILER WARNING******
The following blog post could perhaps spoil your preconceived ideas about Celia Jimenez - revealing her true sinful nature and her penchant for selfishness and sin!!!

I am not one that generally likes to see "what lies beneath". I am perfectly okay with the planters in the driveway staying put...hiding all of the worms and bugs that call that shelter home. I am satisfied with what paint does to a wall covered in grease hand prints, colored marks, and dog licks! And I am absolutely, positively happy to have you keep your bandaid or bandage on...hiding whatever wound there is underneath. My stomach will be gladder for that!!!

But what lies beneath the clothed righteousness of Christ is what I truly struggle with. While I have been purchased through His blood, saved by grace, and dressed in His holiness...I find myself undeniably sinful. Entangled and caught up with my needs, my "rights", my wants, my, my, my....simply put...caught up in myself!

This was never so apparent to me than last week. My poor husband has been sick for quite some time. What started off as a fever and chills quickly turned into a long bout of flu and coughs and aches and pains. My tender, merciful heart was quick to respond to his every need...in the beginning. But with four other lives balancing on my ability to meet their needs...I began to falter in my selflessness.

Up and down the stairs for water, Gatorade, crackers or soup...I found myself losing patience, and I have to admit, there was a bit of grumbling. When a diaper turned into a messy blowout, a toddler threw himself on the floor for no apparent reason, a disobedient child took matters into their own hands...I gave into what I felt like was a deserved bad mood.

I muttered into my head dangerous phrases like, "When I'm sick I NEVER get to lie in bed for a whole day...let alone a whole week." or "There's no way he could do what I do - day in and day out." Justified by the lies that I believed in my head...I allowed these thoughts to fester. Promoting myself and tearing down the one who I pledged my undying love to!

Early the next morning, with Bible in hand, my discipline began. It was a very uncomfortable chastisement...for that very week I had been studying the book of I Corinthians...Chapter 13 to be exact!

Love is patient, love is kind.
It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

From first verse, I was in tears. Two words I had set out to be - patient and kind - and along the way my selfishness crept in and choked them out. Bitterness had replaced the joy of serving. I had placed conditions on my love...and those conditions were not being fulfilled. Therefore, I was justified (in my mind) for my behavior.

Our society revolves around two-way love. A love that is given AND received on the basis of merit. Accomplishment always precedes acceptance. But this love...the one that was demonstrated for us through sacrifice and death...is not based on merit or acceptance or conditions. This love is supernatural. It stems from the radical root of grace - planted by an unconditional, loving God.

This love yields all personal rights. It is unselfish, never demands precedence, never demands recognition, never demands applause, does not demand consideration,  does not care whether it is honored, whether it is elevated. This love is deep, never dwells on what life owes it. It is selfless.

Love is living - not for ourselves - but for those whom we love. Placing their needs above our own. Seeing to their interests first - as of higher and greater importance. In practice...I was fulfilling this...taking care of those needs before my own. But in my heart, I became frustrated by the lack of importance placed upon my own needs! I felt sorry for myself in how much I was lacking. An opportunity given for me to serve my family...and I could only see myself.

Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.
 Philippians 2:3-8

Nothing out of selfishness...with humility of mind...having the attitude of Christ...emptied of self...becoming that of a servant...death on a cross. Through the power of the Word and the filling of the Spirit...I began to look afresh on the environment of my home. On my own, I was powerless to see the filth that was lying underneath. But through the Spirit's work of making the gospel real to my heart, the power of my selfishness began to weaken.
Knowing the frailty of man, I fully believe that this will be a struggle for me until the day I go Home. But I pray that the next time selfishness shows it's filthy head...I will be more equipped to battle it sufficiently...without the cost on my family!

On Sunday night, I was trying to get everyone to their respective classes...somewhat on time! :-)
As we were walking towards the sanctuary we saw some of our friends - also trying to herd  gather their children!
One of our little friends made a diversion into the bookstore and quickly came back out asking her daddy to puleeze by a book for her.
Her daddy said no.
Enter Miss Pat.
(For those of you that don't know...Miss Pat Collins just LOVES children!)
She overheard the exchange and offered to buy said book.
Of course, Amy, watched this entire transaction...and managed to find herself...where else...in the bookstore!!! Hoping that Miss Pat's generosity encompassed her too!
(All the while, I am looking high and low for Amy - wondering where she could have gotten to!)
Finally I found my lost daughter in the bookstore...with a book and a Scripture rock in hand...and a very generous benefactress!!!
Miss Pat blessed FIVE children that night with her kindness.
Amy decided right away that she would write a thank you card for her.

Dear Miss Pat,
You are very kind hearted.
Thank you for the book.
Miss Pat, when you go to heaven
you will be a great woman of God!
Thank you
Love,
Amy

Jason has been really sick for the last week. He spent most of the time in bed...barely concious. We were a bit worried...but he finally seems to be doing better. Amy made this card for him...complete with a photo she snuck out of a photo album!!!

DAD. Your family Loves you.

Very simply put. But it is exactly what he needed to hear!
I think this is what turned him around! :-)

When I was a little girl...I was absolutely, positively sure that one day I would be a missionary. As I grew up, the desire grew stronger. I began to make life choices that would see this desire to fruition. At times, I became distracted and went off course a bit...but for the most part...I was devoted to this calling.
Little did I know that God's plan was a slight variation of what I had in mind. A missionary to Paupa New Guinea, Africa, or the Philippines? No. Wife to a man led by the Holy Spirit, committed to a life of service, and seeking to minister to anyone in need. Yes.

To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven... Ecclesiastes 3:1

One night...sitting at our tiny table in our tiny apartment, our first year of marriage...Jason trusted me with his dreams. We sat with empty coffee cups long forgotten, dreaming starry-eyed of our future - we wistfully wondered if it would ever come about.

A time to be born, and a time to die...Ecclesiastes 3:2

Living in Arizona - close to our family - we settled into our comfortable routines. Two babies joined the ranks...life got a little crazier. But we loved our church and loved our friends and loved our family. In the midst of our comfortable little lives, God called us out. To move to a new place. A new church. New friends. New challenges. And so...we were onto Charlotte.

A time to plant, and a time to pluck what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down,  and a time to build up...Ecclesiastes 3:2-3

Moving was not easy. Six months without a job was challenging to our marriage, our faith, and our family. But a blessing came in the form of Calvary Church and we finally found a HOME!! Two years as a sports evangelism pastor then transitioning to a high school pastor - Jason thrived in this new home. The students quickly found their place in our hearts...and we loved them like our own children!

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; Ecclesiastes 3:4-5

After many sleepless nights, early morning prayer times, tearful talks, searching the Scriptures and counsel seeking conversations...we realized that this season was coming to an end. Jason's desire to reach beyond...to impact more...to spread the Truth further than our backyard brought us to the hardest decision we've yet to face. But with willing obedience, we surrendered our lives once again to the leading of our Lord.

A time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silent, and a time to speak...Ecclesiastes 3:6–7

As of June 3rd, Jason will no longer be working at Calvary Church...although we will continue to call it our home. Our new season is only beginning to take shape. It has a name, a mission, a focus, a plan and even a  board of directors. It does not yet have the stability of a regulated paycheck, financial security, or a well traveled path. But our confidence and our hope and our security is in our God - who has always been faithful!!!

I know that whatever God does, it shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, and nothing taken from it. God does it that men should fear before Him. Ecclesiastes 3:14

This season is entitled:  re|shift ministries. Born out of a desire to help parents, teens and pastors disciple the next generation with a biblical worldview. Stopping the downward spiral of biblical illiteracy - starting in the home. Concentrating on three ambitions - emboldening parents, teens and pastors to shift back to their God-intended position, place and purpose;  equipping parents, teens and pastors with a biblical worldview grounded in Christ; and engaging the sphere of influence parents have over their teens, teens have over their friends, and pastors have over their families.

That which is has already been, and what is to be has already been; and God requires an account of what is past. Ecclesiastes 3:15

It is not for everyone to applaud, affirm, or agree with. Obedience does not usually come with a cheering section. It is a calling on our lives in which we need to obey. Another opportunity for us to lay down all that is comfortable and trust again in His sovereign plan! This comes in many different circumstances and challenges for every one of us. We are choosing to obey...not knowing what the future holds...but knowing He holds our future.

God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work. Ecclesiastes 3:17

A season that is unchartered. A future that is hidden. But a God that will not be thwarted. A purpose that will be seen to completion. A season that will change our lives!

It is hard to believe that we are on the cusp of spring!!!
February was a bit of a blur...so much packed into the shortest month of the year!

Jason and I were incredibly blessed by a weekend getaway with some amazing friends!
The fellowship was wonderful, the games were silly, the conversation was endless...and the FOOD...delicious! :-)

We were also able to visit the beautiful Biltmore Estate...which I have been BEGGING to see from the moment we moved here! It is a bit out of our price range for a "day-outing"...but some very gracious friends gave us some FREE tickets!!!

Which of course, made the day even more enjoyable!
A flurry of snowflakes surrounded us as we drove through the grounds and approached the house...and I had to pinch myself from thinking I was back in my beloved England!!!
The weekend was definitely a treasured memory-maker...thanks to our super good friends!

February was also filled with a bit of crafting! (Gasp...yes, on occasion...I do engage in craft activities...but generally, only when there is a holiday approaching!!! :-)

There were some very special cards made...

...for some very special people...

...made by very serious children!! :-)

February also had it's share of FIRSTS...
...Tyler is learning how to write his first cursive words...

Amy tried her hand at knitting...(definitely a first)...

...notice that it is not her momma that is teaching her...that would definitely be a marked FIRST!!!

And I am proud to FINALLY say...February marked the FIRST month of no pull-ups - even at night time! (HUGE sigh of relief...yes, you remembered correctly...it has been almost a full year of this! :-)

And this Lil Miss is trying to stand on her own two feet...without the help of anyone else...

...it is very brief...so for picture's sake she did have some assistance!

February also brought Jason's much anticipated trip to Brazil.
He was asked to go with Dr Geisler as he spoke at a large Christian Conference in Campina Grande.
But once the director of the conference found out that Jason is a youth pastor...he was asked to join in the line up of speakers.

Jason was humbled and blessed to join his mentor and hero of the faith on this trip.

The Consciencia Crista is a huge event that attracts Brazilians from all over the country.
They estimated that about 60,000 people were there on any given day...either under the tents, in the
break-out sessions, in the Tabernacle, or at the People's Park.

Jason was able to teach the youth three times while on this trip.
He was amazed at their passion for the Lord and their hunger for His truth.

Jason was also able to meet other pastors and youth pastors from the area...and other countries.
They swapped stories, prayed with each other, shared truths and ministered to each other like only fellow laborers can.
It was an incredible, life-changing trip!!

And now...spring seems to be upon us!
Which brings another flurry of activity just awaiting around the bend...

On days like today...when I feel completely and utterly spent...when all is poured out of me and there is nothing left...

I need Your grace.

When everyone is getting along and school is enjoyable...when the chores are done with cheerfulness and nary a grumble...

I need Your grace.

When my sin overwhelms me...my selfishness defeats me...my pride overcomes me...and my temper gets the best of me...

Oh Lord Jesus, I need Your grace.

When marriage seems easy...when communication comes naturally...when all seems right in our home...

I need Your grace.

When doors are slammed, angry words are spoken, feelings are hurt, and forgiveness is not forthcoming...

Sweet Lord, I need Your grace.

When I wake up with the sun...spend time refreshed in Your Word...pray over my family...

I need Your grace.

When errands are cumbersome, laundry is mountainous, and making dinner is monotonous...

I need Your grace.

When I stand in line at the store and someone quickly rushes forth to pay for ALL of  my groceries...when friends appear at my doorstep with steaming meal in hand...when prayers are lifted up to surround me and family...

Precious Lord, I feel Your grace.

When I am kneeling before You in all of Your glory...the depth of my sinfulness becoming undeniably apparent...the finality of the cross becoming a reality...the veil being stripped forever away...

Oh Lord Jesus...I will MARVEL in Your grace.

Saturday morning the sun made a glorious, warm...brief...appearance!
It was much too nice to stay cooped up inside all day.
I ran through the plethora of places I could take the kids...wondering which ones would actually be feasible with me flying solo. (I have been known to try and accomplish too much on my own!!!)
The winning destination...

 Reedy Creek Nature Preserve.

Perfect for a day of exploring...

a bit of investigating...

...and just chillin!

After taking a tour of the Nature Center we were off on our walk hike!!!

We set out with high hopes of reaching the Robinson Rockhouse...
which we learned was about TWO miles away!!!

After about twenty minutes of walking hiking...

we decided to change route to Dragonfly Pond...
much more adventurous!

At some point, everyone had a walking stick.
The older two used it for just that...walking...
Jackson's stick alternately became a sword or gun (depending on the "bad guy" he was fighting)...
which of course made the trail all the more slow exciting!

We took plenty of rest stops...

enough to catch our breath...or catch up period!!

And after all that hiking...it was time to PLAY!!!
It was such a fun, inventive play ground that kept the kids busy for a very LONG time!

The two youngest spent the most time in this super huge sandbox.

Yes, I did let Hailey play in the sandbox! GASP!!! :-)
And she probably did get a fistful of sand into that mouth...and some in her socks...and pacifier...etc!!

But then I put her in the swing to try and "shake" it all out of her!!!

She didn't seem to mind!

 A super fun Saturday.
A repreive from missing Daddy.
A special time of making memories!

I wish I could stop time.
Not indefinitely, of course.

Just enough to grab those giggles and snuggles to last me a lifetime.
To chronicle every cute quip and hilarious side story ever played out in my home.

Because the reality is...my babies are growing up...all four of them!

Obviously, having four children I should know by now that newborns become infants over night.
Then as you blink your eyes (and get adjusted to lack of sleep) they turn into toddlers.

While you're desperately trying to pick up cheerios and teething rings and any other leftover food that might be on the floor...they become TWO year olds!!! When did that happen???

Unfortunately, time seems to warp speed at this point and life just zooms past!!!
But I don't ever want to forget these treasured days...these precious faces...these tiny fingers and toes!

I don't ever want to forget this precious older brother...always willing to lend a hand, fetch a diaper, wrestle, or even play make believe!

I don't ever want to forget random "silly" dances, crazy made up words, funny faces, or unique talents for making everyone in the family laugh!

I don't ever want to forget that every stick is a gun, every car is a race car, every doll is named "Lucy", or that everything GOES IN YOUR MOUTH!!! :-)

I don't ever want to forget long "deep" talks or heart-felt prayers or the squeals of joy when Daddy comes home!
I don't want to forget beautiful cards, date nights, trips to the zoo...or puppet shows, karaoke songs, or dance moves!

Soon they will be all grown up and my memory will be hazy at best...

but I don't ever want to forget these precious times we've had...

just being together!!!
