The Jimenez Family

Eight
I don't remember much about when I was eight...even less about seven!
But looking back over all that happened in this year...
I can't help but think you will vividly remember this past year of your life.
So many changes.
So many new things.
Several challenges.
SUCH GROWTH!!!!

Prayer Warrior...

You have been so very diligent in your prayers for your family and those whom you love.
Seeking God's favor on "the new ministry" and "daddy's book".
Praying for uncles to have jobs, grandmas to be healed, and cousins to move safely.
And we have seen prayer take on a new meaning for you...as you have watched the Lord answer!

Faith...

There were a couple of rough patches this year. A day that you announced that you weren't sure if God was real...His Word true...or our prayers significant.
Not an emotional time...or attention grabber...but more of an earnest seeking of truth.
We acknowledged those questions and prayed that God would show you His presence...all the while pointing you continually back to His Word.
You remained steadfast...daily reading your allotted "devotions"...each night praying for more faith.
And then multiple things happened at once...blessings from friends, a save at the abortion mill, a missionary captive set free, and several other "miracles".
And the God that parted the Red Sea and raised Lazarus from the dead...was the same God that answered our prayers for faith.
My sweet girl...I pray that you remember that when you move onto eight...that He is the same - yesterday, today and forever!!!

Sister...

Much of the year was spent the two of you together. Many times you asked if you could take Hailey...to play upstairs, to go outside, to read to...anything.
Through your eyes of imagination we have had dogs and lions and monkeys crawling around our house.
You have been a sweet big sister...learning that little eyes are always on you...wanting to be just like you!
That challenge will only grow as time goes on...but we pray that your love for Jesus and His Word will be the biggest impression you make on those looking up to you!

Ministry...

The first day at the abortion mill was tough. It was not your choice to be there...and quite honestly...you never wanted to go back. You struggled with the "why" and could not bear the "how come"...as car after car turned into that parking lot. You shuddered at each picture and had lots of tears on your pillow that night.
It was a hard first day for us as your parents...wondering if we had done the right thing.
Had we pushed you too far.
Amazingly enough...four months later...you are our little prophetess. Speaking truth to those that will listen.
Sharing your faith. Singing on the microphone. Praying fervently for salvation and rejoicing over a "save".
This was a part of your path of faith. And while it is still not a "pleasant" ministry...we have watched you see others beyond yourself. So much for one so young!

Sweet Amy girl...these are just a few of the things we celebrate that God has done in your life this past year.
Our precious little girl, we love you. We treasure you. We thank God for you.

We pray that the eternal truths...His Word...which you have so diligently memorized...has gone down deep into your heart as seedlings.
And as this year of eight unfolds...we pray that He will grow those seedlings in your heart to bear much fruit in Him.
That your life will be a reflection of His goodness. His faithfulness. His grace.
Just as this past year was not one without it's bumps and hiccups...
we know there might be mountains and valleys ahead.
But we commit you to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling
and able to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy.

Happy Birthday, sweet Amy girl!!!

Last week graced us with several days of warm... sunshiny...beautiful weather!

The kids were outside almost EVERY day...doing school, eating lunch...and of course...playing!

On Saturday, Tyler and Amy had some special friends over for the day.
With the Superbowl coming up in a few weeks...my kids have been OBSESSED with football.
So, naturally, as soon as the teams were selected the kids began their own superbowl...complete with downs, plays, and team names!

I'm not sure who won...I was trying to referee as much as possible...while keeping an eye out for the little (inexperienced) ball players running underfoot!

All to quickly, the weather turned back to cold, rainy, and dreary.
But thankfully...we had a super fun field trip planned to keep us upbeat!

Tuesday morning we headed to the local Krispy Kreme factory...YUMMY!!!

We learned all about glazes, jellies, and the importance of ICE (who knew?).
The kids drooled over the donuts as they popped onto the conveyor belt and longingly eyed the frosting as it slathered over each donut.
At the end of our tour...EVERYONE received a "sample" cup of fresh donut holes.
We had emptied three cups in about three minutes! DELISH!!!

After the tour we headed over to the mall close-by and let everyone run the sugar off!
Lego store, Disney store and Bass Pro shop kept them entertained for hours!

It is a sweet blessing to have friends that get to share in all of our adventures and field trips!

And now...as the rain drizzles down and the clouds threaten to snow...we are back to dreaming of springtime!!!
One of our Christmas presents was a renewed membership back at the Discovery Place Museums. Super fun times ahead in the year 2013!!!
New Years Day dawned cold and dreary...a perfect day to spend INSIDE playing!!

The last time we were here...Hailey spent most of her time in her stroller...or being held.
But she was all smiles and adventure this time round!

And of course...she was more than willing to be an active participant in the older kids imaginations!

Jackson and Hailey are so much like a little couple...they play...they bicker...they laugh...they imagine...all the while sticking VERY close to each other!

This was Jason's first time as well...so everyone wanted Dad to "come see this"...and "look over here"...

I was completely content to follow Miss Hailey around while the bigger kids (J included) took off to explore new sights!

We always leave the water fun for last.
It has something for everyone...but inevitably...everyone leaves soaking wet!
A super fun way to start off the new year...and a new season of discovery!!!

But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and may share His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death,  that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Philippians 3:7-11

To be completely honest...I have sacrificed very little in my short lifetime.
I have been blessed with an incredible, godly family...
that showered me with love and blessings growing up.
I was surrounded by godly mentors and wise counsel at every crossroad of my life.
I have had pain and disappointment and suffering...but at a very minimum in comparison to others.
And sacrifice...at one point I would have easily pointed to this situation or that to show how much I had "sacrificed" for the Lord...but honestly...it is not much.
And truth be told...I am not sure that I counted it as rubbish...counted it as loss...counted the value of knowing Christ higher than that which I was sacrificing.
I probably prided myself on the very act of sacrifice...and in doing so...missed the true blessing of sacrifice.

This past year was different.
2012 was truly a year that I counted it all loss.
Not to say I lost everything...on the contrary...I gained everything.
And looking back over the year...I can not help but be overwhelmed...not with what was sacrificed...but with what was poured out to us in the midst of sacrifice.

And I think that is where the difference lies...not in what is sacrificed or how much...but the heart behind the sacrifice.
When what is at stake is the surpassing knowledge of Christ...the item on the altar does tend to look a bit like rubbish...unimportant...empty.

The beginning of 2012 found me desperately hanging on.
Hanging onto my position in ministry.
Hanging onto certain relationships and friendships.
Hanging onto financial stability.
Hanging onto the trappings of this world.

But as the year began to unfold...the desire to be "found in Christ...not having any righteousness of my own" began to overshadow any thought of sacrifice.
And instead of seeing it as a great loss...or disadvantage...or void...it became almost natural to lay it all down.
To count it all loss.
Big or small...whatever it may be...some things so silly you would laugh to hear them...but truly laying it all down.

And surprisingly, looking back over this past year...I am overwhelmed...not with what was sacrificed...but with how my God chose to pour out His blessings upon us.
Time after time God overflowed our cup...scattering our doubts and fears...steadying our  unsteady faith.

And while it is true...I have not suffered the loss of ALL things...my heart is satisfied with the pearl of great price.
Knowing that whatever it is that needs to be laid down will only ever be repaid with an intimacy so sweet has righted my skewed thinking on sacrifice.
No longer do I attribute sacrifice as a measure of my own righteousness...but an acknowledgement of the lack thereof.

I cannot say what this new year will hold.
Thankfully, I cannot see what is beyond the bend...only what is right here in front of me.
But with confidence...humility...and gratitude...I will continue to count it all loss...for the sake of Christ.
As the sun was trying to rise Christmas Eve,
I was bustling in the kitchen preparing my annual
Cinnamon-Roll-Drop-Off.
This is the third year getting up early and making homemade cinnamon rolls for our close friends.
The kids and I bundled up and braved the rain as we drove around Charlotte...stopping by to hug friends and hand them a still-warm pan of gooey, yummy goodness!!!

We rushed home...ate lunch/dinner and headed off to church for our Christmas Eve service.

First up...the three year olds!!! And let me tell you...three year olds on Christmas Eve are pretty excited!!!
We had a great time serving in the class...playing games, making crafts...and of course, having a snack!!!
Next up...candlelight service.
The service was absolutely beautiful.
Definitely the perfect way to quietly prepare our hearts for worshiping and celebrating our Savior!

Once home, there was a present awaiting each one of the kids and a quick snack...and then off to bed they went...anticipating the coming morning!

Jason woke up early Christmas Day and asked if he could wake up the kids...:-)
He was so excited to get the day started...but I managed to hold him off for a little while longer...

and then the squeals and giggles and shouts and laughter rang throughout the house...

After opening her first present...Hailey soon tired of the whole ordeal.
She didn't want to OPEN any more presents she only wanted to PLAY with the one she had already opened.
and play we did...

 ALL morning long!!!
Everyone had something to keep them busy!

And after playing...there was plenty of reading to do...everyone had a new book to read!

The excitement of the morning soon gave way to the quietness of the afternoon.
This lil one had very little energy left to spend...on anything!!!
Naps all around helped us get ready for our yummy Christmas dinner.

We had prepared the kids as best we could for how this Christmas would play out.
Having made a significant life change in the middle of the year...we had not planned on there being many presents under the tree.
But several close friends and family decided otherwise...and blessed us tremendously.
As a family, we spent the afternoon reflecting on all the blessings God had poured out to us throughout the year.
A new calling...with close friends to encourage and support us.
A new ministry...with sufficient provision.
A new book...with an impacting message.
But the same sweet Savior to carry us through it all!
We are truly humbled at the abundance of God's gifts given to us.
With the ultimate gift wrapped in a manger.
This was Christmas...because of Christ.

It is a time of busyness.

Parties. Socials. Crafts. Cookies. Lights. Presents.

Every week something to anticipate and look forward to.

Counting down the days on the advent calendar.

Marking time until Christmas.

Graciously blessing those closest to us.
Preparing our hearts to celebrate.
Bowing low to humbly adore Him.

Yet, in the midst of these festivities we are still surrounded by darkness...

A fallen world. A world blinded to their need for a Savior. A world pervaded with evil and darkness.

As much as we want to "let loose" and celebrate with all abandonment we are still tethered bodily to the disappointment, grief, and sadness surrounding us.

Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the SUBSTANCE belongs to CHRIST.
Colossians 2:6-8 & 17

We have received Christ.
We therefore should be walking in Him, rooted and built up in HIM.
Are you established in Him? Finding your hope securely in Him?
It is easy to become taken captive by the philosophy and empty deceit of this world.
To get lost in the presents, the lights, the fallacy of Christmas "cheer".
We want it to be beautiful...exciting...perfect.
We build up the DAY of Christmas...rather then the substance behind it.
Our expectations take hold and when not met - disappointment seeps in and robs us of our joy.
The stress of having everything "just perfect" skews our perception.
And yet, it is merely a shadow of the things to come...
The greatest celebration is still to come.
Not on December 25th.
But...

our hope is resting in an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven...though now for a little while we have been grieved by various trials,  so that the tested genuineness of our faith - more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire -may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I Peter 1:4-7

Through the busyness of this next week...the excitement...the disappointments...
the  presents...the anticipation...the joy...the grief...
may you move from the shadows...to the substance.
Which is CHRIST.

My cousin Zana and I share a LOVE for anything British.
British countryside. British literature. British tea shops. British period dramas.
And definitely British stately homes.
So naturally...while she was here we made a stop at the Biltmore House in Asheville.
It's not British....but it's the closest to it in America!
The last time I had been here it was snowy and blustery...so we weren't able to see the grounds.
But on this trip...the sun was shining...the leaves blazing...and the sights breathtaking!
Meandering up and down the trails...exploring the wooden bridges...just letting the beauty of God's creation seep deep down inside of me, I was overwhelmed with His goodness and His splendor.
I would have been content to just sit...and be still...and know that He is God.
But alas...there was so much more to see and do!!!

Zana and I tend to be quite silly when we are with each other...

and at times probably even embarrassed the kids a bit...but it was fun!

Perfect picture...gone topsy!

After we had our fill of the grounds, Zana treated us to fill our bellies.
We aren't used to such fancy digs...
so we had to scrounge up our manners and try hard not to put her to shame! :-)
The house and grounds were completely decked out for Christmas...and while we were eating dinner...there were many people scurrying around the house lighting a plethora of candles.
Unfortunately...there were no photos allowed...but try and picture the most beautiful home you've ever seen...even more beautiful!!
There were carolers set in the front foyer and their echoes filled the entire home...
serenading us from room to room.
It was definitely an enchanting evening...filling us with Christmas cheer and anticipation for the season ahead.
Sadly it was the last evening we had with Zana...
but we're hoping it will fill her with fond memories that draw her back to see us again!!!

This Thanksgiving we were SO thankful and blessed to have my cousin, Zana, stay with us.
Zana and I are only a few months apart...and basically grew up like sisters.
She lived in California and I lived in Arizona...but every time we were with each other...
we caught up on all that had transpired since the last time.
As little girls we told silly stories and wrote little plays. We sang songs and danced around like princesses.
We got into trouble...for the same reasons...
and tried our hardest to maneuver our way out of the following punishment.
I think God knit together our mother's hearts...as they were busy discussing their crazy daughters!
As we grew older we giggled and talked about boys...and our hopes and dreams...and our future.

And now...we are living our future.
So much has changed...and yet...somethings have stayed the same.
The entire week she was here...we talked...and talked...and talked some more.
We did take several breaks to do some VERY fun outings...

After the festivities of Thanksgiving...
we bundled everyone up and headed to the US National Whitewater Center.
Most of us were content to stay in the sun and watch those that were participating.
Tyler, Zana and Jeremy were up in the air, going through obstacle courses, rock climbing, kayaking...and more.

Hailey and Jackson planted themselves on the bridge...
content to wave, cheer and talk to anyone that could hear over the roar of the rapids.

Though we didn't buy a pass for the lil ones...they did venture a bit of rock climbing...

and some rock "sitting"...

Zana has had a fear of heights and yet every obstacle she met head on
...challenging herself and putting her fears to the test!
Thankfully, she needed a little bit of help on the MegaZip and I graciously obliged her!
Swooping down the line, with the wind whipping my hair, screaming at the top of my lungs, the kids cheering me on just reminded me all the more why I LOVE the great outdoors!!!

Tyler...
This celebration of nine is more than just a party with cake and ice cream...
more than just a day to have fun and play silly games...
more than just a day to receive gifts and special favors...

This celebration of nine is a day to mark how you have grown through each passing season.
How you have matured.
How you have changed.

This celebration of nine is a time to remember the years gone by.
And to anticipate the years ahead.
A time to give thanks for the significance of your life and the blessing it is to all who know you.
A time to admire the young man you are growing into.
And to encourage and challenge you as you walk the path ahead.

Tyler...

You have truly been a leader for your siblings. You are always looking to help your younger brother and sisters. Nurturing them...loving them...playing with them...honoring them. Choosing to serve your family rather than complaining.

You have emerged as a true prayer warrior...leaving child-like bedtime prayers aside...
you have begun to pour your heart out to the Lord and truly make intercession for those in need.

You have shown these past few months your heart for ministry.
Serving with your family and hearing the needs of those that are lost,
you have often times showed maturity beyond your years in the way you have shared your faith.
A sensitivity for the message of the Gospel
and the urgent need for truth has been the subject of many conversations.

As God continues to shape you and mold you, we pray:

As you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, ROOTED and BUILT UP IN HIM
and ESTABLISHED in the faith as you have been taught ABOUNDING in it with thanksgiving.
Colossians 2:2

You celebrate nine years...
but we celebrate you.
Who you are.
And who we are because of you.
We love you, TyTy!!!

The traditions...

 The decorations...
 The preparation...

The crafts...

 The feast...

 The cleanup...

The memories...

Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
