The Jimenez Family

As humans...we long for an answer to everything. We want to be able to explain.
To know why. To rationalize. To control.
As Christians...we long to justify the "whys" of a situation.
Or the "reasons" behind certain trials and tribulations.

We are so quick to respond with rhetoric and rehearsed responses.
Commonly spoken phrases that spin suffering and pain in "acceptable" terms.
Limiting our view to what is here and now...and that which is unfolding in front of our eyes.

We decide what the purpose is for walking through challenges.
Claiming brokenness, humility, chastisement, or deepening our faith...
all of which we deem to be God's intention in allowing these struggles in our lives.
In order to make sense of the pain...we focus on our limited understanding of the situation
rather than on what we are able to understand of our God.

In the midst of excruciating trials, Job and his friends sit around analyzing the
causes and solutions of his suffering.
Ranging in emotion and ideas...they all weigh in with different opinions and philosophies.
At the end of themselves...they are aghast with the obvious unspoken answer...there is NO
explainable reason why Job should endure such suffering.
That is...not explainable here on earth.
While focused on what they can see...much was going on behind heaven's closed door that they
could not see.

In response to Job's lingering question...a whirlwind of a response is given.
Not an explanation to the "why" or the "what".
But an answer that goes beyond the suffering and pain.
Purpose does not always make the trial more bearable or easier to endure.
Only knowing the character of Him who allows it...fuels the fire for existence.
Knowing  the sovereignty of an almighty God...who takes part in every element of His creation...
and admitting a deficiency in understanding that which is hidden...
Job recognizes his failing.
I had heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You...
The vastness of God's power...the reality of His incredible might...
the incomprehension of Yahweh's intricate and complex sovereign plan...
answered not the question of "why" to Job...but the understanding of Who.

Being filled with the knowledge of who He is that keeps all of life in balance...
Job no longer questions the purpose for his suffering.
He no longer tries to place a quaint little label over all that was transpiring in his life.

We are too quick to limit our sights. Too quick to relegate pain and suffering to it's own little
box of what our confined understanding can handle.
Instead of trying to figure out the purpose behind the pain...
rather than identifying all the life lessons to be gained from enduring these trials...
be filled with the knowledge of who He is.
Seek to know Him not only through the hearing of the ears...but the seeing of the eyes.
Take stock around you...as the intricate plan of life unfolds...all at the behest of it's Creator.

Let the knowledge of the holy fill you with the assurance that...

He can do all things and no purpose of His can be thwarted.
It takes our family quite a bit of time to ready oursleves for the pool. Swimsuits...check. Water bottles...check. Snack bags...check. Towels...check. Pool toys...check. Sunscreen...check. Everyone is flying around the house...looking for this...getting that. But eventually everyone is settled into the steamy van and we're on our way...two seconds down the street.

In our short history of having children...we have had many, many, many different pool toys coming in and out of our home. Inevitably they break...much sooner than I would have liked...or they get lost. But the most frustrating...is when they wander home with another family playing at the pool. In the last several years, I have had several encounters with other poolside mommies...that have actually challenged me in my "Christ-likeness"! Last week, I brought two new sets of pool toys...straight from the $1 section at Target...still with tags on...for the kids to play with at the pool. Over the course of an hour, there were more toys in the baby pool then children. It was beginning to get hazardous to try and swim for fear of getting knocked in the head by a flying torpadeo. When it was time to head home...I sent the big kids on a mission of collecting our toys. Being that ours were new...it was relatively easy to pick out the bright shining toys as opposed to the dull, peeling plastics. My two new sets of toys were nestled behind two moms playing with their toddler babies. I walked over and asked if they wouldn't mind giving them back because we were leaving the pool. I was told that they were not my toys...they belonged to them. I was flabergasted...seriously? Uh...okay? Um...well...
I floundered a bit. Mostly because in the neighborhood I'm known as the "preacher's wife" and because my kids were watching. I walked away...trying to hush the outraged kids staring at the two mommy "thiefs". We packed up and once in the van I explained that really it was my fault for not labeling our toys. I would NOT make that mistake again!!!

After a cheap trip to the dollar store...we had a few more toys...and believe me...the J on those toys are unmistakable!!! Those are mine. They belong to the J family. They will not be going home with you...or anyone else! :-)

All that to say...it truly got me thinking. I wanted something that would mark my toys MINE. To easily be able to glance down and pick out which ones belonged to us. Isn't that what Christ wants of us? To be so completely set apart from this world that we stand out...that we are clearly marked HIS.

Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing;  then I will welcome you. II Corinthians 6:17

The Old Testament is filled with ways the Lord set the Jewish people apart. How they lived. What they ate. How they worshipped. They were so completely different from the nations surrounding them. Everyone knew about the "Israelites". They were God's witness to a dying world of what purity...redemption...hope would look like. If they compromised...the witness became blurry. And it looked nothing at all like redemption and hope.

We, as New Testament believers, are to the world that same witness. We are that example of Christ..the picture of the gospel to an unbelieving world. A life of transformation. Regeneration. Radical living...that could only take place because of the power of the Holy Spirit.

When those around me see me...are they clearly able to see a difference? Is there a name stamped across my life that becomes evident through all my actions...choices...decisions? Do I resemble a temple of the Holy Spirit? Set apart...marked by holiness?

A silly analogy. One that might not even connect if you didn't live through it. But in that moment...as I looked down at all of my freshly Sharpie marked toys...I asked God to make me the same. Marked with His name. So easily picked out as His. A witness of what the radical power of the Gospel can do in one wrecked by grace.

There is a lot of talk around our house about "worldviews". What they are...why they are important...how they affect our lives. And often times, God allows situations for our entire family to see a worldview in action.  From idea all the way through application and actions. Be it Christian or secular...it becomes apparent how decisions are made and through what filter it comes through.
Recently, I had a conversation with a mother about our children. We talked about similar concerns we had with certain issues that had arisen. It became apparent quite early in the conversation that our worldviews differed...and thus our ideas for child-raising very different! I listened while she explained how her children were "finding themselves" and "working out the kinks" and that eventually...they would become who they were "meant to be". I  mulled over these differing statements while intently listening to her methods of  guiding her children. It was neither the time nor the place to get into a theological debate. But in the days since, it has provided me with much to think and pray about.
I approach my children as sinful little selves. I do not see them as a product of their environment. Yes, when the little ones do not get enough sleep...they are cranky. And yes, when one of my children does not have enough to eat...her blood sugar drops and she acts out. But the reality is...they are sinful...they are selfish...they are struggling in a body of death that has been passed down to them for generations. So while as parents we have laid a groundwork for our expectations on their behavior...the root issue...their heart...is out of our control. And while we feel that it is our responsibility to disciple them and raise them in the fear and admonition of the Lord...the reality is...ultimately...it will be their own choice.
Homeschooling, church-going, Bible-reading, TV-prohibiting, sheltering, moral-living...cannot change the heart of my child. They can not. If I believed this to be true and parented through this worldview...wouldn't I be the same as the mother I conversed with? That my efforts and attempts would bring about the product I desired? That through time and circumstances my children would become who they were "meant to be"?
If I parent from the perspective of "betterment" then I negate not only the origin of sin...but also it's solution and cure. My children would only learn to escape punishment and/or please their parents. They would fail to grasp their complete and utter depravity...and would be caught up only in the works they perform.
But when the mirror of God's Word...the source of correction...reveals to their hearts that the origin of sin is not able to be reformed but only regenerated...the need for a Savior arises. Then...and only then...will the manifold mercy of God's marvelous grace transform their sinful little selves. And their obedience will be from their own personal desire to please their God.
I pondered that conversation for quite some time. I thought about the ramifications of the different worldviews...and how they were playing out in our own homes. And I was convicted that oftentimes...I can get swayed...caught up in the "outwardness" of my children rather than the true condition of their hearts. Forgetting that no matter how hard I "try" to recondition their behavior...sin will find it's way to the surface...because sin is what is in the heart. I examined my motivations for discipline...wondering if I was more concerned about how I appeared to others...rather than the work God was doing in each of them individually. I was reminded once again of my own need for a Savior...and that I had once been a participant of the kingdom of darkness but now a member of the kingdom of light. And that...while I appreciate the hard-work and diligent application of God's truth from my amazing parents...my salvation came through Christ...and HIM ALONE!!!
So while this conversation unveiled my friend's perspective and worldview...it showed me all the more the sinfulness of my own heart...and once again pointed me back to Jesus and my need for Him.

Worldview: n. The overall perspective from which one sees and interprets the world.

I see and interpret the world through God's Word...the unwavering Truth which is the foundation of this life. My perspective comes from the understanding that man is inherently sinful...and cannot remedy this problem on his own...no matter how hard he tries. I believe that God...in His sovereignty and love...provided the ONLY solution to this curse. He gave His innocent Son to die on a cruel cross and accept the punishment I deserved. This is my worldview. And I pray that this worldview trickles down and infuses all that I do and say for those sinful little selves that are looking on!

Well...we did it. We loaded up four kids, five suitcases and six bags...took a van ride to the airport, two airplane rides, one layover, and then one long, congested California-freeway drive...and we finally made it out West!!! It had been almost two years since our last visit to Arizona...and about seven years since my last visit to California. It was high time to spend three solid weeks with dearly beloved family and friends!!!

First up...was a week in Riverside, California.
While there...we celebrated my Grandmother's 80th birthday!
A huge gathering of cousins, aunts, uncles, and loved ones...all for one extremely special, godly, talented, amazing woman!!!

We spent the day eating, playing, laughing, and loving!

We were able to see relatives from all over California and Arizona...and introduce them to all the newest additions of the Jimenez family!!!
It was a beautiful day...full of treasured memories!!

During our stay, my cousin, Zana, had a special surprise lined up for Amy...
she took her out horseback riding!!!
Zana is currently "trick riding" and rather than teach Amy any of those...
she opted for a more safer...calmer ride!!! Thank goodness! :-)

Not to be left out...Tyler had a special treat lined up for him as well. He is a HUGE fan of Ford Mustangs.
We aren't sure when or how it started...
but he makes a note of every single Mustang we pass while driving around town.
When I told him that my Uncle Jeff owned TWO Mustangs - one a suped up hot rod...and one a more updated version...he could not wait to check it out!
Uncle Jeff took his little fan out riding...and even to Mad Madeline's (a popular burger joint in Temecula).
And if that wasn't enough...
at the end of our stay...he gave Tyler a model version of a '68 Stang!!!

We also celebrated Jason's birthday...played several hands of cards (tradition)...learned new Kindle games...and just had a great time with family.

While planning for our trip, Jason and I tried to decide whether or not we could squeeze in a trip
to Disneyland...but my parents took the discussion out of it and blessed us with tickets for the whole family!!!
We decided to surprise the kids...and told them we were going on a "field trip".
They weren't too enthusiastic...probably because it was pouring rain out the window and they assumed we were going to a zoo.
But as we pulled into downtown Anaheim...they started to see more and more Disney signs.
They came to the conclusion we were going to spend the day in Downtown Disney...
wrong again...we're doing to DISNEYLAND!!!!
Then...they were really excited!!

It was a magical day.
While it rained all around us...our tiny little pocket of southern California stayed dry.
The park wasn't too full...and we all had a blast.
Hailey was completely transfixed the entire day...trying to absorb all that was going on around her.
Her favorite character...Minnie Mouse...had a bit of a line...but we braved it for her...

but once she met Minnie...she was out for a few hours!

We wrapped up our time in California...then headed out to Arizona!

Sadly, our time with the Jimenez family found us battling the stomach bug.
Each one of us spent a day or two in bed...trying to get over it...
and then hoping that no one else would get it.
Jason's family graciously served us and nursed us...and then caught the bug themselves! :-(
Thankfully, there were other memories made of playing outside,
building a pool, swimming, staying up late talking,
watering & tending the garden...and lots and lots of loving on family!!!

We took a quick trip up to Bullhead to see my older brother and his family...
and were there just in time to celebrate my sweet niece's first birthday!
Thankfully, they followed us back down to Tucson and spent some time with us before we left!

As always...the last night was spent at Peter Piper...
trying to squeeze in as many good-bye hugs and
love as we possibly can!

The kids were all sad to bid their cousins and grandparents good-bye...
not knowing when they will see them again.
Each time gets harder and harder as they grow older...and form closer bonds with their family.
But it was a blessed trip...spending time with those we have not seen in such a long time...hearing how God has moved and worked in their lives...seeing prayers answered...and learning what to pray for next.

April was full of fun birthday parties!!!!
We had a cowgirl/cowboy party first up in the month.
What a blast! The kids were able to ride the ponies...walk through a barn full of animals...and have a super fun time with all their friends!
Of course, the birthday girl, Darcy Howard, was too busy having fun that I wasn't able to snap any pics of the lil cowgirl...

but she made sure everyone was enjoying themselves!!

Hailey opted for only one ride on the pony...that was plenty for her!

Later in the month we squeezed in a birthday party at Monkey Joes!
The kids had a blast celebrating and slept soundly that night! :-)

Last but certainly not least....

a Minnie Mouse party for our little two year old!!

It was a crazy, put-together-at-the-last-minute, no super cute frills or decorations, loud, fun party!
(Thanks to my amazing husband and his incredible art skills...what you see is all HIM!!)

There were plenty of sweets...cheese puffs...and giggles!!!
A great way to celebrate our precious little girl...and the wonderful friendships God has
brought into our lives.

And now...we are looking forward to all of the parties in MAY!!!

This sweet little girl has been practicing for the last month the same phrase over and over again...
I TWO years old...I Hailey Jimenez!!!
And now...it's finally true.
She indeed is two years old...and there is no doubt that she is...Hailey Jimenez.

Adorable.
Silly.
Cuddly.
Bossy.
Loud.
Snuggly.
Talkative.
Hailey Jimenez

The girl who decided on her own that she needed to be potty trained...and basically did it all in a day.
But the same girl who cried for nights on end when we took her "paci" away!
The girl that talks in full sentences and has very STRONG opinions about...well, everything!
But the same girl that quietly rubs your cheek and says, "best mommy in the whole world".

Sweet little Hailey...you seem to be beyond your years in so many ways.
Our family was surprised and blessed by your addition.
You light up the room and bring joy to our lives.
We love you, sweet girl, and pray God will use you in mighty ways as you grow older.
Happy Birthday!

My little brother just became a father to the cutest little bundle of sweetness several weeks ago.
So, my mom flew into Charlotte and we packed up the van to capacity and took a trek up north to Philadelphia.
It was a trip not soon forgotten...tons of memories packed into every minute of every day!

Sweet little Levi captured our hearts as soon as we met him...each one of the kids wanted to hold him, kiss him, talk his ear off, love on him...and just snuggle him close.
Hailey asked each morning when we would go see "Baby Lebi"...but she made it clear to me while I was holding him that I was HER mommy...NOT his!!!

Being in Philadelphia was a homeschool field trip galore!!!
We started off with Amish country...my personal favorite.
We visited an Amish farm and most of us took a tour of the home to learn all about Amish life...
the two little ones were more interested in the live animals out back!!!
There were baby goats and baby sheep...and plenty of "moo-cows!
The farm was complete with a one room schoolhouse...the kids filed in and took their seats...
and then we looked on the bookshelf and found the same exact readers we use for school all stacked up! :-)

I was a little obsessive about the buggies.
Driving along the streets (at 5mph) I would shout out, "Look, there's a buggy!!!"
And at first, everyone humored me and oohed and ahhed.
By about the hundredth time...their enthusiasm had definitely waned!!!
Just a side note, yesterday Tyler asked me why we didn't see any buggies here in Charlotte.
He said, "Is it because everyone drives so fast here?"
I guess he missed the whole AMISH part of AMISH country!!!

The quiet farms nestled in the rolling green hills were absolutely beautiful.
We took back roads here and there...passing buggies and scooters.

After a quick treat and some craft perusing, we headed to the Lancaster Science Museum.

The kids had a BLAST!!!
There was enough to keep everyone busy...but not too much to be overwhelming.

The next day the kids headed to Hershey, PA...the sweetest town in the US.
I opted to stay snuggled up with Levi in the hospital and let my mom tackle the sugar overload.

The last big stop on the trip was downtown Philadelphia.
We had much on the agenda...but were lacking 1) a daddy to help, 2) a grandma to help, and 3) a stroller to help...so needless to say I was a bit nervous of how we'd tack it all!

But it was a BEAUTIFUL day!!!
Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Betsy Ross House, Constitution Hall...
I stuffed as much historical info into their little impressionable minds as they allowed...
then we took a little sidewalk break for a hot dog and cheese steak!
Then it was time to
head to the Franklin Institute.

This was the biggest science museum the kids had ever been to...and I think EVERYONE within a hundred miles had chosen that same day to attend.
Thankfully the kids kept close and had a great time learning!

Needless to say, everyone was a bit exhausted on the way home.

My friend, Sarah, from Bible College days lives in Philadelphia.
We stopped off to see her and meet her beautiful family!
Having had three boys she had a ton of baby boy clothes that she was willing to give to my lil nephew.
And on top of that - she blessed them with a diaper cake full of baby goodies!
So sweet!!

It was great to get reconnected and the kids hit if off right away!!!

It was a fun, long, exhausting, blessed trip.
We were so thankful to have the precious time we had with my brother and his little family.
The kids are already asking when we can go again...
and sweet little Baby Levi is already sorely missed!!!

Christ is risen from the dead
Trampling over death by death
Come awake - come awake
Come and rise up from the dead...

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake - come awake
Come and rise up from the dead...

Oh death, where is your victory?
Oh hell, where is your sting?
Oh church! Come stand in the light!
Our God is not dead - He's alive...
HE'S ALIVE!!!

It was for freedom that Christ set us FREE...
therefore...keep standing firm...
and DO NOT be subject again to a yoke of slavery.

Church...come awake...come awake...
Come and rise up from the dead!!!

Dear Jimenez Kids...

Most of my blogs revolve around an event...a moment...a memory...that I try and capture in a picture or word and hold onto in a timeless place. Taking each outstanding performance or accomplishment and heralding it here so as to never forget. Making the most of every birthday and milestone so that looking back you will be able to see all that has transpired.
But those are the moments you are most likely TO remember. The big events. The special days. The celebrations of life. And the everyday life that ebbs and flows will only become the backdrop to those noticeable occasions. Your little nuances and quirks will only serve to be the fabric of your personality. The rhythm of life adapted into who you are and what you have become.
So in an effort to treasure this brief measure of time...here is your everyday life...

Tyler...

You are the first to wake up every morning. Last week you asked me if you could wake up even EARLIER then your 7:15 start time. You wanted to wake up and spend time reading your Bible and writing in your prayer journal. And now...6:45 on the dot...the light turns on in your closet and the door is shut...evidence of your commitment. You have challenged me and inspired me.
When everyone else starts to wake up...you head downstairs and get out bowls and cups for your siblings breakfast. You offer to get Hailey and try and be as helpful as possible. And then you eat. And eat. And eat some more. Obviously, you are a growing boy!!!

Generally, you are upstairs, ready to start your school before any of your other siblings have even finished breakfast. You have finished your first book for TNT in AWANA and are half-way through your second. You have challenged me each week to memorize the TruthScript for this year. (I'm working on it!)
You work hard doing your school. Having a perfectionist attitude toward almost everything you try to do...you do NOT like to make any mistakes...however small they maybe! :-)
With school finished, you find whoever is free and join in their land of make believe. You imagination is vivid and your fun is contagious!

Afternoons are spent reading the Hardy Boys and Sugar Creek Gang. Playing  with Legos. Football with the neighborhood kids. Pushing Hailey in her little car. Wrestling with Jackson. Or the never ending job of straightening up the garage (seems to be one of your favorite things! ;).
Tyler, you have become very sensitive and insightful to the different stresses that play a part in daily life. When temper tantrums are thrown...or messes are made...or challenges are faced...you are quick to sidle up to me and offer me your hugs and support. You always ask how you can help...and volunteer to run errands with me - simply because you know I need help with Hailey and Jackson.

Your time with Dad is your favorite. Be it playing football, listening to History or Bible, helping him grill out, or playing Blokus...you are his constant companion!

Evening times you are ready for an episode of Dennis the Menace, Leave it to Beaver, or Lassie. You've grown out of "baby" shows and only humor Jackson when he wants to watch Curious George. :-)
You are the first one to get ready for bed...and holding out hope that one of these days we'll actually extend your curfew a bit later. You pray over each of your parents...exuding with gratitude for parents that love God, love you, and homeschool. In that exact order. Every night.

This is your everyday life...the threads to your weave...the pattern of your day.

Amy...

You are generally the last to wake up every morning. You relish your sleep...and have a feline nature at times. You are usually just making your breakfast as everyone is finishing up and are left rushing to get upstairs so as not to be left alone.
You have finished your AWANA book, workbook, and TruthScripts. Your director has just recently given you some verses from previous years to memorize. In lieu of a devotional, you have started to read whole chapters of the Bible...and even whole books. Many mornings I go in to see if you've started school to find you cuddled up with Bible in hand.

You sing through your school, literally....and at times can be distracted by anything and everything. But amazingly...there are hardly ever any mistakes. You enjoy reading...no, you ADORE reading! Sitting with me on the "reading" couch you regal me with your voices and inflections during reading time. And sometimes...during math or language arts you have snuck in a book to "glance at" in-between problems.
Afternoons are spent in your room...reading. You
have finished over twenty Mandie books, several Betsy and Tacys, Imagination Stations, Cul-de-Sac kids, and several Little House on the Prairies. You LOVE to read!!

If not reading you are creating. Masterpieces to send off to relatives. Paper dolls for your siblings to play with. Elaborate pictures in your journal to record your Bible reading.Your imagination and creativity have no bounds. Two weeks ago you set up an entire VBS in the upstairs. Turning Tyler's room into the toddler room and Hailey's room into the nursery. You had all of your curriculum laid out and even had come up with a name for yourself  - Ms. Tacey. You gave me a tag for Hailey and Jackson...and put homemade braclets on each of them...reminding me what time I needed to pick them up at.
Some afternoons slip into evening...and you only appear for dinner. You are completely content to create the day away.
In the last several months you have been asking more and more to help with dinner. You pull out my apron from the closet and bring the stool right up to the counter. Within minutes, our little kitchen turns into a five-star restaurant with waiting customers. You are always sweeping us away into your imaginary world!

Evening times are spent reading to your younger siblings or learning to sew. You have finished making a pillow and a doll baby. You are always looking for a new project to tackle!
You would take an hour shower if allowed...singing at the top of your lungs...thinking that no one can hear you! At bedtime, you pray over each of your parents...heartfelt, loving prayers...often bringing tears to our eyes. The other night you asked God to "give Mommy everything she needs to be close to you, God, and to know that You love her so very much".
Lately, bedtime has been "confession" time. Each night you confess something that is weighing heavily on your heart. Being sensitive to the working of His Word and the Holy Spirit in your life...we listen and love as best as we can. Then a kiss on the head...and lights out.

This is your everyday life...the elements that come together to make a whole.

Jackson...

You scuttle down the stairs each morning with sleep still clinging to your face. Blanket in hand, you snuggle up with me on the couch...pushing anything that I might've been holding to the side. After about five minutes of being still...the batteries kick into full gear...and you are high octane until bed time.
There is not a moment during the day that you are not talking, punching, kicking or fighting bad guys. Unfortunately, they seem to be everywhere in our home. Waiting for you to take care of them.
During the time that Tyler and Amy do school, you either fight the bad guys (first choice), play with Hailey, or attempt a little school of your own. Letters and numbers are interchangeable at this point. (But Leapfrog is helping with this!) Colors are coming around. Shapes are good. And JJ is definitely an easy name to conquer writing!

You are gentle with Hailey...most of the time. You help her. Snuggle with her. "Read" to her. And pretty much, give her whatever toy she wants...even if you were playing with it first.
Lightning McQueen is almost always near by...on the bathroom floor...in your closet...in the hallway...or on the kitchen floor. Racing cars is second best...after the bad guys have been vanquished. And then comes Legos...the "Jackson" version. Your little stubby fingers aren't quite nimble enough to create
what you envision ..but dumping all the pieces out...spreading them around...and picking them up again constitutes "playing with Legos" for you.
Chicken nuggets is on the menu for you...everyday of the week. I don't even ask anymore. It's just assumed.
Afternoons are spent reminding you: rest time is not over; yes, you can go to the bathroom; yes, you can get a new CD; and no, rest time is not over. Spending a little time away from everyone else tends to make you sleepy...and sometimes I find your cheek pressed between a mound full of toys and your pillow...and you are fast asleep!

You have become a sought after companion. You imagine along with Amy and tackle along with Tyler. But your favorite thing to do...is sit at the table and color with Hailey. Stickers. Stamps. Crayons. Markers. Mess. Almost every afternoon!
When you are outside...you usually have a plastic sword or Nerf gun in hand for those pesky bad guys that seem to always be lurking! Inevitably, no matter how hard you try...mud seems to find you! The other day you told me that you had fallen down in the mud...and then you picked up a plastic phone and showed me "the pictures" of how it happened! You are learning to peddle on your bike with the assistance of training wheels and a gentle push every now and again.

Evenings are spent joining in the activities of everyone else. You are always looking to be apart of whatever seems to be the most fun. :-)
Prayers vary depending on the day. You've prayed for "Jack and Mike" a lot in the past (we aren't sure who they are). Now you have been praying for your family...Daddy's book...and everyone to feel better! :-)
When it does finally come time to recharge your batteries...you are quick to find reasons to get out of bed. I need to go to the bathroom. Can you put lotion on my lips? Did you pray with me, Mom? I love you, Dad.
Then...within minutes...you are asleep! You play hard...but sleep even harder!

This is your life...the pieces that build up the puzzle that make you...YOU!

 Hailey...

You wake up as soon as life stirs in this house. Calling out every name...hoping that someone will come get you out of your crib...Mommy, Daddy, Bubba, Amy, JJ...and then the cycle starts again. Breakfast is all you have your mind set on!!!
Having recently found your independence...you want to do everything on your own. Without the assistance of your ever willing siblings. And should they interfere with your individual attempts...you make it known "I'll tell Mom about you!" in a very convincing tone!
You spend your mornings following Jackson around...deciding that everything he is playing with...is what you would like to play with. At times he gives up...and other times...he just moves to a different room. For the most part, you two are thick as thieves. Making messes. Running around the house - singing at the top of your lungs. Building with blocks. Racing cars. Coloring papers. Having fun!

In the last few weeks you have basically potty-trained yourself. You decided one morning that you would like to go potty on the toilet...and that was that! The other morning...after successfully staying dry...you looked at me and said, "Mommy, I am so proud of you!" :-) Which was very fitting - coming from you.
If there is a discussion at any point of the day of anyone going anywhere...you are very quick to shout out "I'm going...I'm going"...because you would hate to miss out on anything fun!
Every afternoon is met with naptime...something you are very unwilling to continue. You ask me daily if you can have toys in your crib while you sleep...and the answer is always "no". And there have been some afternoons that you have fiercely protested...and thrown every blanket, doll, and pillow out of the crib...just to let me know that you are boycotting your naps.
Yes, you have found your voice! :-) And have quite the vocabulary for an almost two year old. You talk up a storm and for the most part...we understand every word you say!
Afternoons are spent playing in the sandbox and running around outside. Your playmate from next door is almost always at your side...as well as Jackson to keep you in line! You see yourself as just as capable and able to do anything and everything your older siblings do. You kick the soccer ball. Try and throw the football. Mimicking whatever you see them doing.

Your most favorite past time however is snuggling up with a book...no matter what time of day...or who the reader is...you are always asking to be read to! Generally, there is one book that must be read over...and over...and over again...until the words are practically memorized by the reader. :-)
Your bedtime routine includes the great big comfy chair in your room...and plenty of songs. Jesus Loves Me, Itsy Bitsy Spider, Old Macdonald, and Jesus Loves the Little Children...just to name a few.

This is your life...the layers that come together to form the wholeness of you.

As the tide ebbs and flows...changing the scenery of the coast upon which it swirls...so the backdrop of your life will change with each passing day. What was once important will soon be forgotten. But these everyday moments will weave in and out...remaining constant in the fashioning of who you are.
Enveloped into the centrical and common purpose of God's design for you. And so, we will continue on in this common...everyday life...praising Him for giving us just one more day with you.
