The Jimenez Family

Year after year we have watched little freshmen walk into youth group...unsure, unsettled...nervous...scared...excited...and quite honestly...a bit immature! :-)
Then...as the weeks and months fly by...they settle in...learn who they are...and spread their wings.
All the while...we love on them, pray for them, teach them, laugh with them, cry with them, confront them, challenge them...and give all our energy and passion to their discipleship.
And in what seems like a moment...they are donning their cap and gown...beaming with excitement...and bidding us farewell as they are off to their new adventure.
It is a bittersweet process.
One that involves a give and take...a letting go...and a leap of faith.
But this year...is different.
This year, we will say farewell...not just to our seniors...but our juniors...our sophomores...and our freshmen.
This year...we are the ones that are on to a new adventure.
We are the ones letting go. Taking a leap of faith.
We are bidding farewell.

I can still remember walking into the "youth" room...wondering if this is what God was calling us to do.
And walking out...thirty minutes later...knowing that this was going to be hard. Really hard.
Little did I know all that God had prepared for us in the years to come!!!

Jason, obviously, is a natural at adapting.
He can be cool, crazy and intensely serious all within a thirty-second window.
I had a bit of a harder time adjusting. It was easy for me to be crazy...but cool? That was never me.

God began to show me...it wasn't about being another "friend" in their life. Most of them had plenty.
No...they needed more than that.
Taking time to listen to their hearts...spending time breaking down the Word with them...and holding them accountable to commitments made...that became my priority.

There were definitely high times and low times.
Times of great exhilaration to see our "children" walking in the truth.
And other times of great sorrow and discouragement as those we had prayed over and mentored...chose to abandon their first love.

But the relationships we have formed...will be with us forever.
We will not say farewell to those students that have worked their way into our hearts.
Have become to us like our own children. Those will continue to grow...but on a different level.

It is not unusual to get a phone call, email, text...or even a visit from our former students.
Some just want to catch up...share exciting stories...life-changing events...others need a bit of a truth-slap-down and know they can always count on us to do it.
These relationships have transformed over time also...changing from mentorship to friendship.
Watching these former students take on life's biggest challenges...watching their faith become their own...watching them learn to run to their Savior for every need...that is the sweetest harvest.

We could not have done the youth group without those that faithfully served alongside of us.
These are the friendships that became our backbone.
Giving up their vacation time, their free time, their social time, and sometimes...their sanity...they willingly "held up" Jason's arms throughout the ministry. (Exodus 17)

They were our biggest cheer-leaders...our loudest affirmation...and our constant support.
Having these devoted friends...made camps more fun...lock-ins more bearable...and our load lighter!

Some of them had never worked with high school students before...but they jumped in with both feet and were willing to learn and willing to open up their hearts.

Camps were always the highlight of the year.
So much preparation for such a short amount of time.
But the relationships formed...the decisions made...and the TRUTH proclaimed made these weeks the most memorable of the ministry.

And what would youth ministry be without all the crazy events...

and missions trips...

Nicaragua...

Mission @ Charlotte...

NYC...

Columbia...
These trips proved to be the catalyst for several of our students' decision to enter into full-time ministry.
An amazing time of servanthood, humbling, and grace.

Two out of our four children were born while serving in the youth ministry...so we watched our own children grow and learn and "play" alongside the high school students...

Having our students studying the Bible in our home throughout the
summers was probably Jason's favorite thing.
This was a smaller group.
Only a dedicated few gave up precious time in the summer to dig deeper into God's truth.
But we LOVED these evenings!

When working with youth...it becomes inevitable that their lives are changing at warp speed.
Watching them grow up...sending them off to college...and eventually getting the call...

to invite you to their wedding!!!
It is incredibly humbling to watch those you've ministered to, prayed with, cried with, and laughed with...

...enter into one of the biggest decisions of their lives...and allow you to be a part of it.

Nothing could prepare me for the challenges and joys of serving in the youth ministry.
Serving alongside of my husband brought me to a new understanding of his gifts and calling.
It allowed me to see him...being used by the Holy Spirit...completely sold out for the Lord...humbly serving at all costs.
Standing alongside of him...watching him grow in his faith and gifts...
has opened my heart to the possibilities ahead.
Submitting to Christ's authority over our family...he has obediently gone wherever God has asked.
I am so blessed to have served with him during this chapter of our lives.

But more than anything else...this journey has brought many different treasures in my walk with the Lord.
Being accountable to a higher standard...that of teacher, role-model, mentor...caused me to take a hard look at all areas of my life. Most of which were not up to par.
My love for the Word and the need to really dig deeper and study began to change my heart. My need for grace and compassion opened my eyes to those in need of the same.
Working in the youth ministry brought me face to face with painful situations...ones that aren't even imaginable. Car accidents, family emergencies, fatal illnesses, horrible abuse, traumatizing circumstances...all hidden in our students' hearts. My understanding of God and His grace changed dramatically.
Reconciling pain with His nature and goodness became a new element in my faith.
Lessons that cannot be learned without the blessing of a hundred high school students filling my life...ones that I wouldn't trade for anything in the world!
I am a different person because of this journey we've been on.

So as we say farewell to this ministry...we are so very thankful to have been chosen and called to serve for the time given.
The students and leaders will always be engraved on our hearts and will continue to fill our prayers.

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you.
We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience,  and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of His holy people in the kingdom of light.
Colossians 1:9-12

Farewell!!!

About thirteen years ago...I sat on a rock in Vacs, Hungary with my good friend Nicki.
We had pen and paper in hand...and one objective - the list.
It had been talked about before...verbalized in the darkened setting of our dorm room.
But sitting on that rock...we made our commitment to settle for nothing less than what was on our list.
The list of what we were looking for in our future husband.
Some were silly...some were wishful thinking...but most were essentials.
Uncompromising standards.

Little did I know that eight months later...I would meet him....the man that met my list.
Some of the silly ones, some of the wishful thinking ones, but ALL of the essentials!!!

About eighteen months later...we were here...in Hawaii...on our honeymoon! :-)
(Burnt to a crisp!)

Celebrating eleven years of marriage to my best friend!!!
Loving you even more today than all those years ago.
Praising God for accomplishing more than I could ever ask or imagine in a partner.
And thanking Him for meeting every single qualification on that list!
Happy Anniversary!

Busyness is the season of life we are in.
There is always somewhere to be. People to connect with. Children to ferry here or there.
But when it becomes wearisome to "do" all those things...a respite is in order.
Last weekend, centered completely around our family. Just the six of us.
And it was WONDERFUL!!!

Friday was a beautiful day to start our season passes at Carowinds.
Given as a birthday present to all our family from my parents...it was a perfect time to just get away and have some fun!

With so many different rides to go on...I am thankful that we have all season to try them out and choose favorites!!

Hailey is just a smidge to little for most of the rides there. But that's okay...
we spent our time cuddling and charming those around us!

Saturday marked the beginning of the end to Tyler's football season.

He had a GREAT team this year...maybe not winning that many games...but learning how to function as a team and growing together!

He was very blessed to have Coach Arrington this season.
Coach spent so much time developing each of their different abilities...but mostly, teaching them truth from God's Word!

This little one quickly learned that the stroller is NOT the place to be during games.
Finding her independence this season has been quite the adventure!

Sunday brought us an opportunity for us to dedicate our sweet Hailey girl.
Standing in front of our church family...thanking them for all of their love, encouragement, and support...and also affirming our desire to raise her in the fear and instruction of the Lord...was a special blessing!

Sunday being Mother's Day...I was treated like royalty! :-)
Jackson told me several HUNDRED times (Sunday and since then)
Happy Mother's Day, Mommy!
And of course, he told everyone that passed him in the hall at church or in the parking lot...man, woman, child, adult...there was much confusion for some people! :-)

Once we were home, the kids had me sit down while they read to me from Proverbs 31.
Then I was treated to a movie they had made (with the help of Daddy)...complete with picture slideshow and video clips. It was the sweetest...most memorable Mother's Day gift ever.
A precious way to wrap up our family filled weekend!

There was nothing in life to truly prepare me for the journey of motherhood.
No matter how many times I watched my younger brother...how many babysitting jobs I had accomplished...or Red-cross and CPR courses I completed...nothing compared to those first tentative steps of parenthood.

Your fragile threads of life hinging on my ability to nourish, protect, shelter, love and cherish.
Responsibility in it's greatest most selfless form took on new meaning.
The simplest of tasks seemed monumental.
Even picking out the right laundry detergent seemed daunting.
I soon got lost in the flurry of what I deemed "good parenting".
Based on everything that I could see on the outside.
Everything I thought I could "control".
Everything on me.

But beyond the most basic of your needs there emerged  the more important,
larger vacuum of life waiting to be filled.
One that I couldn't fill with hugs or kisses...or words of encouragement.
One that couldn't be controlled with discipline.
One that had nothing to do with me.
More than good behavior, a great education, or appeasing appearances...
there is an even greater task at hand.
For within each of you, my precious children, there is an intrinsic desire to be at one with your Maker.
To find lasting purpose and meaning in this shallow, shadow of a world.
Securing your eternal destiny and future hope.

It is this need that redefined my role as "mother".
Although your choice is yours alone...
the task of shepherding and nurturing that choice became my greatest goal.
Demanding of me to truly "live" Christ out even in my darkest hours.
Your little eyes and ears watching and waiting...
to see how this "Christian" woman would handle real life.
In moments of frustration, moments of doubt, moments of fear,
and moments of anxiety...how did I respond?
Did I rightly divide the Word of Truth?
Did I set apart Christ as Lord in my heart...giving an answer for the reason for the hope that I have?
Did I display the joy that is found in walking with my Savior?

Well, sweet ones, the journey is far from over.
I am a work of God's faithfulness in progress.
There have been many failures and opportunities to offer your sweet forgiveness.
But the joy of being your mom has brought me so much deeper into the heart of my Savior.
The responsibility and honor of having four treasures...has increased my understanding of grace.

And there is no greater thing than to see my children walk in TRUTH.
To watch the seedlings of His Word spring forth and produce fruit in your life is His blessing in action.
To know that His Spirit is in you - guiding you, teaching you, comforting you, leading you...is peace in it's sweetest form.
I am so blessed and humbled and honored to be your mom! :-)

So much of life is measured out in accomplishments, successes, and achievements.
All signifying growth.
All signifying milestones.

But you have always had a different standard for your life...
From early on, you have strived to know more of your Savior and study His Word...

to minister to those in need all around you...
offering words of comfort, grace, hope and truth.

Pouring out your life in obedience as a sacrifice...
willing to do whatever He asks of you...

and being my greatest hero, example, role-model and friend.
You have truly "accomplished" much in thirty-three short years of life.

The beautiful art of dying to self and live for Christ!

I love you, Jason!

Happy Birthday!

If all goes according to plan...
Funny phrase.
Never seems to apply to me and my brilliant ideas.
I've had many of them...most (if not all) have started off great...

and then ended in total flops...
leaving me scrambling to find a way to redeem myself!

Last week was no different.
We set out on a nice long walk.
The weather was beautiful.
Not a cloud in the sky.

Along the way, we decided to stop off at the park.
The park wasn't that busy and the kids had fun playing with each other.
Then...it started to get dark.
Moms started gathering their little chicks and herding them to their mini-vans.
We heard thunder.
And we were about TWO MILES from our van!!!

And then...the rain came...

the two that could run...booked off
leaving me huffing and puffing with the double stroller - trying to catch up!
Needless to say, my poor little kids were DRENCHED by the time we got to the van.
I felt so bad looking at my four sweet soggy faces...and so...I made a decision...

...it was time for some KRISPY KREME...to redeem myself!

Rain? What rain?
Still standing as the "best mom in the whole world" (as quoted with full doughnut mouths!)
So no...it did not go according to plan...but revised plans are sometimes a lot more YUMMY!!!
